Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma ,succeeded his uncle Rama Varma as king in early 18 th century, at the age of 23. He successfully suppressed the Ettu Veettil Pillamar(“Lords of the Eight houses”) and his cousins. King Marthanda Varma was noted for his sincerity and takes a major part renovation of Temple. Murajapam and Bhadradeepam festivals in the temple was introduced by Marthanada Varama. Murajapam is a prayer that is done in every 6 years
Marthanda Varma gave the Travancore’s Kingdom to Lord Sri Padmanabha in 1750. The King decided to rule on behalf of Lord Padmanabha. He also decieded that his successors would serve the Kingdom as Padmanabha Dasa. So all the Kings of travacore was preceeed by the title Padmanabha Dasa and the queen’s name name was preceded by Padmanabha sevini. Maharaja of Travancore Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma serves as the trustee of the temple as Sree Padmanabhadasa.

The Idol
Sree Padmanabha Swami’s idol has greatly noted for its comparision. There are 12008 Salagrams that are brought from Nepal and are taken from the banks of river Gandhaki. The Garbhagraha or the Sanctum sanctorum of the temple is located on a stone slab. The main idol is about 18 ft long. The dvotees can view the idol through 3 different doors. Through the first door,There is a great view of head and chest . The hands can be seen through the second door. Through the third door, holy feet can be seen. "Katusarkara yogam",covers the diety of Padmanabhawhich is an ayurvedic mix, that makes a plaster and makes diety clean.
Other Shrines
There are 2 other important shrines inside the temple. They are Thiruvambadi Srikrishna swami and Ugra Nara Simha moorthy. Thiruvambadi shrine gave an independent status . It represents the shrine of Sree Padmanabha. There are namaskara mandapam, flagmast and bali stones in this shrine. The lord of Thiruvambady who is a divine Charioteer of Arjuna, is Parthasarathi. From Gujarat ,The Lord of Thiruvambady’s granite idol was brought . Seventy Two Families of Vrishni Vamsa Kshatriyas presented this granite idol from Gujarat. They belong to the ancestry of Lord Krishna and are known as Krishnan vakakkar. The two-armed granite idol, with one hand holding the whip and the other resting on the left thigh holding the conch close to it, is in standing posture. On Ekadasi days the Lord is dressed and decorated as Mohini. There are also shrines for Rama accompanied by Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman, Vishwaksena (the Nirmalyadhari of Vishnu and Remover of Obstacles), Vyasa, Ganapati, Sasta and Kshetrapala (who guards the temple). Grand idols of Garuda and Hanuman stand with folded hands in the Valiya balikkal area.
The Story behind Sri Padmanabha Swami Temple
The storey is associated with the great sage Vilvamangalathu Swamiyar. Vilva Mangalathu Swamiyar has installed many temples in Kerala. He was a great devotee of Guruvayoor Sri Krishna swami.He even had got the power to talk with the lord.The history says he was resided near Ananthapuram temple in Kasargod dirstrict. Swamiyar prayed to Lord Vishnu for his darshan or "auspicious sight". The Lord is believed to have come in the guise of a little boy who was mischievous. The boy defiled the Idol which was kept for Puja.The sage got angry and chastised the boy. The boy disappeared suddenly. The sage was in dep pain. He called for the darshan (sight) of his lord with pain. But the lord didn’t appeared.One day the lord came to the dreame of the sage and said “My dear servant please accept my humble obeisances.I am satisfied in our devotion(bhakti).You have to go to Ananthankaadu to get me again.There you will get my darshan”.
After a long search,the sage reached near jungle named ‘Ananthan Kaadu’. There he heard a pulaya lady threatening her child that she would throw him in Ananthankadu. The moment the Swami heard the word Ananthankadu he was delighted. He proceeded to Ananthankadu based on the directions of the lady of whom he enquired. The Sage reached Ananthankadu searching for the boy. There he saw the boy merging into an Iluppa tree (Indian Butter Tree). The tree fell down and became Anantha Sayana Moorthi (Vishnu reclining on the celestial snake Anantha). But Lord assumed was of an extraordinarily large size, with his head at Thiruvallom, navel at Thiruvananthapuram, and lotus-feet at Thrippadapuram (Thrippappur), making him some eight miles in length. The Sage requested the Lord to shrink to a smaller proportion that would be thrice the length of his staff. Immediately the Lord shrank to the form of the Idol that is seen at present in the Temple. The Sage saw the Lord in three parts thirumukham(the lotus face), thiruvudal (the lotus chest) and thrippadam(lotus feet of the lord). Swami prayed to Padmanabha to be forgiven. The Swami offered Rice Kanji (Rice porridge)and Uppumanga (salted mango pieces) in a coconut shell to the Perumal(lord) which he obtained from the pulaya woman(woman belonged to lower cast).
A temple was constructed with the assistance of reigning King and some Brahmin households. The Ananthankadu Nagaraja Temple still exists to the north west of the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The Samadhi (final resting place) of the Swamiyar exists to the west of the Padmanabha Temple. A Krishna Temple was built over the Samadhi. This Temple, known as Vilvamangalam Sri Krishna Swami Temple.This temple belongs to Thrissur Naduvil Madhom.

How to visit PADMANABHA SWAMI TEMPLE
Only Hindus are permitted inside the temple. There is a strict dress code that needs to be followed while entering the temple. Men need to wear mundu or dhoti (worn around the waist and going down up to the heels) and should not wear shirts of any kind.Women should wear saari or long skirt.
